Columbia Sailing Club Hosts Several One Design Classes

Columbia Sailing Club has a 60-year tradition of One-Design Racing.  We regularly host major regional and national event throughout the year. Many of our feet members compete locally throughout the Southeast as well as National events.  CSC facilities support dry-sailed dinghies and keelboat, and include three launching ramps, plus a large staging and dry storage area.

Sunfish (Fleet 670)

The Sunfish Class offers diversity unmatched by any one-design racer. Young, old, short, tall, big, small, man, woman, world-class or just learning, we are a welcome and opening group of people who love our little boats. The Sunfish fleet is active racing year-round. Our Thursday Night Summer Series is so popular we’ve added in 2018 a Fall & Spring Series.  You can now sail the most popular boat ever built year-round! Our fleet members frequently compete nationally and internationally.

Laser (District 12)

aaDSC_9430

The Laser is one of the most popular one design fleets in the world.  It was introduced at the New York boat show in 1971 and has become more each year.  It has been an Olympic class boat since the 1996 summer games.  It is one of the few boats that is enjoyed by so many types of sailors including Juniors, Masters, Olympians, and recreational sailors.  We have the largest junior laser fleet in Long Island Sound and have a very strong adult program on the weekends.
We had over 20 Lasers in the 2015 and 2016 junior programs and the adult fleet bring our laser numbers on campus to just under 50 boats.

The Laser hull is 13’10.5” feet and allows for three sail configurations.  At CSC we primarily have Standard and Radial sailors, although several of our more competitive sailors have two sail sizes that they choose between for training days.  The smaller sailors switch between the 4.7 and the Radial, and the larger sailors switch between the Radial and Standard rig.

Melges 15 (Fleet 222)

Melges 15 Fleet 222 is Columbia Sailing Club’s newest one-design fleet, and the club’s fastest-growing. Although the boat was only introduced in mid-2020, CSC already has eight boats actively sailing, and other clubs in South Carolina also have growing fleets.

The Melges 15 fleet races year-round in CSC’s Spring, Summer, and Fall dinghy series. Boats from the fleet also travel to regional and national regattas.

In addition to being a fun and sporty racer, the stable platform of the Melges 15 makes it a great recreational boat for many skill levels too.

Contact the fleet captain if you would like more information or to take a demo sail.

DSCN0326

San Juan 21 Fleet 31  is one of the best established fleets at CSC and hosted the 2013 National Championships. In addition, Fleet members have won many San Juan and PHRF events. Today, the National Association is one of the most active one-design keelboat associations in North America. Membership in the association numbers 400+ sailors from all parts of the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. The Association boasts fleets organized into three regions, East, Midwest, and West with the largest membership concentration in the northwest and southeast portions of the country. A Regional Championship regatta is hosted annually in each region, one of which becomes the North American Championship on a rotating basis.

J/24 (Fleet 67)

DSCF5398

Over 5,100 J/24s have been built around the world. It is probably the most successful small one-design keelboat class in the history of sailing. The J/24 class attracts some of the most talented sailors in the world. J/24 sailors often dominate Grand Prix events, the America’s Cup, and the Olympics. Because of this concentration of talent, you get the chance to sail with and learn from the best. The J/24 also attracts the weekend club sailor because the boat is fun and responsive in any condition and can be easily handled by one or two people. Rugged construction, 4-berth interior, outboard power, and easy trailerability provide the confidence and comfort to stretch your sailing horizons where no other small boat can go.

Multi Hull

aDSCF4031sm

The Multihull fleet at Columbia Sailing Club is dedicated to promoting Multihulls and Multihull sailing, providing a number of events throughout the year.  We host the annual Tommy Whiteside Memorial Regatta in the spring that attracts a mix of multihulls that include Hobie Cat’s, F16’s, F18’s, A Cat’s and an Open Fleet.  It’s not uncommon to see fleet members blasting around the lake in excess of 20 knots.

Please come join the fun as two hulls are always more fun than one!
