PB&J Splashy Hour | Ages 4 to 8

PB&J Splashy Hour

Ages 4 to 8 | Prerequisite: None

Designed as an introductory, hands-on program, the goal of PB&J is to plant and then sow a seed that creates a love for the outdoors, the water, and of course, sailing! It's not a class that teaches beginner sailing like our week-long camps that starts at age seven, but rather a preparation for it, akin to tee-ball as an introduction to baseball.

As such, we will play, laugh, swim, learn, and sail, and hopefully impart our own love for sailing in the process. We aim to build life-long sailors by helping kids become more comfortable in the water and providing them with a fun and welcoming introduction to sailing.

Each PB&J class starts with the three rules: have fun, wear a lifejacket, and listen to the coach. With just three rules, things are kept simple and safe.

PB&J Splashy Hour is available only in Summer 2024

Sailing 420s | Ages 12 to 18

Sailing 420s

Ages 12 to 18 | Prerequisite: None

This option is for learning and honing the fundamentals for the sport/activity of sailing, and no experience is required. We will teach rigging, boat handling, sailing fundamentals, points of sail, seamanship (knots, weather, etc.), sportsmanship, and water safety.

Instruction is done in club-owned C420 sailboats which are operated by two sailors working together. Sailors learn and reinforce the fundamentals of steering, trimming the sail, and balancing the boat in an exciting, hands-on way.

  • The season will consist of 6 practices
  • Practice Times: Sunday 1pm-4pm
  • The fee includes the use of boats and equipment, coaches and coach boats. No boat ownership required.

Ready to sail a 420?

Racing and Exploration - Dinghies | Ages 8-18

Racing and Exploration - Dinghies

Ages 8 to 18 | Prerequisite: Some sailing experience, can ``single-hand`` their boat

This option is for sailors who have completed a 101 or other beginner option and want to continue sailing. Sailors will operate a variety of boats including Optimists, Skiffs, and Sunfish. The course will teach additional sailing concepts while honing the fundamentals learned in the beginning course.

The course includes introductory racing concepts like basic racing rules, starting sequences, and race courses, as well as introductory cruising concepts like destination sailing and basic navigation. Each of these tracks can be further explored in their respective Sailing Summer Camps.

Upon completion, sailors interested in competition may consider joining CSC Youth Racing to compete in regional regattas around the Southeast.

*Sailors in Optimist, Skiff, and Sunfish sailboats will need to be functionally competent in “single-handing” their boat, which involves controlling the sail and steering simultaneously. This multitasking, while essential, can sometimes be challenging, especially for our youngest sailors. If your sailor is not quite ready to single-hand, consider some more “tiller time” in the Sailing Optimists program.

  • The season will consist of 6 practices
  • Practice Times: Sunday 1pm-4pm
  • The fee includes the use of boats and equipment, coaches and coach boats. No boat ownership required.
  • Practice Dates: Apr 7, Apr 14, Apr 21, Apr 28, May 5, May 12
  • Weather Make-up day: May 19
    • A maximum of one practice will be canceled due to weather. For any additional days with inclement weather, indoor and no-wind practice itineraries will be used.

Ready to step up your sailing skills?

Big Boat Sailing | Ages 10-18

Big Boat Sailing

Ages 10 to 18 | Prerequisite: Some Sailing Experience

This wildly popular program is one all our sailors look forward to, and one all the parents are envious of…it’s Keelboat Sailing! The program is taught on a Sonar 23' Keelboat and is a great boat on which to begin sailing the 'Big Boats'. Want to sail even *bigger* boats up to 34 feet long? Try our Adventure Sailing camp available in our Youth Sailing Summer Programs!

Sailors will learn how to sail as a crew, each having individual responsibilities, but working as a team. They will also discuss basic navigation, trip planning, boat mechanics, and environmental awareness.

This class is perfect for the child that loves the water and experiencing it in a variety of ways. It is an inspired alternative to the conventional racing track route and will build a foundation for lifelong sailors.

Are you ready for an adventure?

CSC Youth Racing - Optimist Development Team ''Green Fleet'' | Ages 8-13

CSC Youth Racing - Opti ''Green Fleet''

Ages 8-13

The Columbia Sailing Club Youth Racing Team competes in the Junior Grand Prix of the South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association (SAYRA), as well as other events hosted by sailing and yacht clubs in our region. With opportunities for varying skill levels, including beginning racers on our Optimist Development Team, joining CSC's Youth Racing League is an amazing alternative to traditional youth sports.

The Optimist Development Team is a subdivision of CSC Youth Racing designed specifically to train and develop new racers, preparing them for competition. ODT sailors will compete at SAYRA events in the Optimist Green Fleet, which benefits from on-the-water coaching before, between, and most notably, *during* races. This enables our ODT sailors to build competence and confidence in a fun, safe environment with the support of their coach.

Just as in other Youth Sports, you do not have to be the best sailor in order to begin competing. In fact, you will only become the best by competing as much as you can! The only qualification is that you can safely handle your boat around other boats, and you can work on building the rest of your racing skillset as you go!

Boat ownership is not required for Optimist, Club 420, or Open Skiff sailboats. However, if a host club for an out-of-town regatta is not offering a chartering option for your sailor’s boat and a CSC vessel needs to be transported to the event, a fee of $75/event will apply.

Regatta registration fees are a separate fee charged by the hosting club/venue and are not included in the fees paid to CSC. CSC Youth Racing Coaches or the CSC Sailing Director will provide the registration details for parents to register their sailors for each regatta.

Optimist Development Team will practice for 3.5 hours on Sunday afternoons (12:45pm-4:15pm)

  • Coaches will assist with rigging from 12:45pm to 1pm.

Say Goodbye to Coaching Fees!

Coaching fees are now included in the cost of each season. The rationale for this change is that, as a member of CSC Youth Racing, each sailor is expected to compete at the scheduled competitions each season. The only way for our sailors to grow and develop as competitors is to compete. Additionally, as a club-level member of SAYRA and annual host of a SAYRA Junior Grand Prix event, it is important for CSC Youth Sailing to demonstrate commitment to SAYRA competition.

Remember, CSC Youth Racing’s seasonal cost does not include the individual regatta registration fee charged by the host club for each event.

CSC’s Spring 2024 Youth Racing Season will consist of four practices and feature two regattas:

  • April 7 – Practice
  • April 14 – Practice
  • April 20-21 – Regatta
    • Open Skiff Un’Regatta | Augusta Sailing Club – Appling, GA
  • April 28 – Practice
  • May 5 – Practice
  • May 12 – Regatta
    • First Annual Mother’s Day Regatta | Columbia Sailing Club – Columbia, SC
  • May 19 – Weather Make-up Day
